Text Box: 2006 Goodall Standard, Sitka and EI Rosewood

There really isn’t anything Standard about this guitar. It’s James Goodall’s interpretation of the dreadnaught style, but with the rich Goodall overtones he’s known for. When I first picked up this guitar in a room full of high-end acoustics, it immediately spoke to me. The first thing I noticed was the stellar neck profile — a comfortable medium C with a satin finish. The richness of sound, in comparison to the several Santa Cruz and Collings guitar, was just so much more pleasing. Those guitars are known for their focus on the fundamental, so I guess that means I like a guitar with lots of overtones.

In an effort to be thorough, I looked in many different stores and put about 40-50 guitars through the paces. In the end, none of them could match this Goodall, so I brought it home with me. It’s probably been one of the best gear purchases I’ve made in a very long time. I find myself playing a lot more than I used to. The freedom from amps and effects means I can really focus more on playing and less on “tone.”

I’m using this guitar principally for fingerstyle these days and, with the authoritative bass and overall complexity, it sounds stellar.
