Text Box: 2008 Reeves Custom 30

The Reeves C30 is simply a sweet 1-channel amp with great Hiwatt/Marshall tone. (It’s been written in several places that the amp is 70% Hiwatt and 30% JTM45). I originally bought the amp as a pedal platform since I liked the idea of a high-headroom amp with power scaling. With those big KT66 tubes, it has a huge clean sound.

The amp has a full tone stack, a master volume setup, reverb, a “cut” knob to remove some of the high end, and a power scaling knob. Power scaling, for those of you who don’t know, is an attenuation design built into the amp. It scales many of the tube operating variables as they move through the signal chain, rather than simply choking the sound at the output. I’ve found Power Scaling, like attenuators, to be useful for modest volume reductions but not that great at low volume.

I typically run the amp with the power scaling all the way up and use the amp in master volume mode. With the boost engaged, you can get some pretty nasty distortion out of this amp.

It has footswitchable boost and reverb functions.

The custom cabinet was built by StoneAge to pair with this amp. John designed the 1x12 baffle in his 2x12 cabinet to create an oversized 1x12. The semi-open back creates a pretty huge low end for a 1x12 and prevents the amp from sounding boxy. The cabinet is loaded with a Reeves Vintage Purple speaker. StoneAge is one of the top custom cabinet makers I know of. The cab sounds huge. (Oh, and I believe this was the first oversized 1x12 John ever built. He now offers them as standard cabs.)
